smoked tomatos...
Smoked TomatosWhere to start…each week there are so many discoveries and what may be new to me may be old hat to others, however, there are a few things old hat or not that I feel compelled to share. I will start by mentioning Lloyds Gourmet Condiments most recent addition to their range…. Smoked Tomatos in Grapeseed Oil. These are just magic, they have the most subtle smokey flavour and just melt in your mouth (is this legal?) The oil also retains the smokey flavour so is great to use as a salad dressing (see Kathryn’s recipe – Mixed Salad with Smoked Tomatos for added inspiration).

pimentos de padrôn...
Midyim EcoAnother major discovery is Midyim Eco Resort’s Pimientos de Padrôn. Pimientos de Padrôn are small green pepper unique to Padrôn a region in the north-west of Spain. The good new is that this magnificent little pepper is now being grown in Maleny and grower, Richard Mohan is suppling some of the local restaurants as well as having a stall at the growers markets when they are in season…. but that was the good news… the bad news is that by the time this newsletter has gone to print, the season has ended, so even though I have shared this discovery with you, no one else will able to share in the delight of it until the new season begins… some more good news, that is in November, roughly about 90 sleeps!

When I discovered Richard’s stall he had just whipped up a batched of Pimientos de Padrôn. He simply fried them whole in some oil until they blistered, then placed them on a serving dish and sprinkled them with salt and a light drizzle of Spanish sherry vinegar – they were just divine. What amused me was to read later that they are sometimes referred to as a ‘Russian Roulette’ Pepper. Apprehensively you eat the first, surprisingly it is not hot, so you have another, it’s not hot either, they are quite more-ish, so stopping at two is not an option, of course it is not until number five that you suddenly hit a semi hot one, gingerly you grab another, it’s fine and just when you become complacent and think that these are sissy peppers you hit the hot one from hell that just about seers the roof of your mouth, of course by now you are thoroughly addicted to these things and stopping is even less of an option, so you just repeat the process until they are all gone. Anyway, when November nears I will share this with you all again as they really are worth looking out for!

el chimichurri...

ChimichurriSomething a little different I discovered is ‘el Chimichurri de papa’. It is an Argentinean Savoury Sauce with a wonderful herby flavour. It is a bit pesto like, but without the nuts and Parmesan. I find it a little dangerous, as I am prone to eating it by the spoonful, I am working on a little self restraint (or therapy), I’ll see how I go… el Chimichurri de papa can usually be bought at the Noosa Farmer’s Market and I recently came across it at the Yandina Markets as well.

green tea ice cream...

Ice CreamGigi’s Ice Cream is another new find. They produce deliciously creamy organic Ice Creams. Even more of a new find was their Gourmet Creamy Green Tea Ice Cream. It is superb, it has a really refreshing green tea flavour (as you might expect!). It would make a great finale to an Asian dinner party and a definite conversation piece. Gigi’s are based in Kunda Park and I have come across their ice creams at quite a few local deli’s.
