There is a variety of unusual tubers available on the Sunshine Coast, although most growers are growing them specifically as additions to their own specialised curry pastes and preserves. A few of them do supply to restauraunts and occaisionally have stalls at markets when harvest time comes around and that is where you will find some of the more unusual varieties, bamboo shoots, turmeric and Galangal amongst some of the finds. Ginger would have to be one of the most versatile ingredients. Fresh ginger is available easily and there are some wonderful processed ginger products being produced. Buderim Ginger seems to have covered all bases, producing marmalades, sauces, pickled ginger, crushed and grated ginger, ginger in syrup etc., but that is not to say that they are the only ones producing fabulous ginger products; there are plenty of others that are around. Look out for: Pickled Ginger, Ginger cordial, Ginger Gummi Bears, Ginger Beer – alcoholic & non alcoholic, Ginger tea, Ginger ice cream & choc-coated ginger, bamboo shoots, galangal, lotus roots, pods and flowers, cardamom, turmeric, spice mixes & curry pastes. |
